Achievements, Problems and Prospects in China´s Water Conservancy Construction

Pan Jiazheng

Strategic Study of CAE 2002, Volume 4, Issue 2,   Pages 42-51

Abstract:

In the first part of the paper, main achievements and progress in water conservancy construction of China over the past half century are briefly summarised in respect of flood-control, irrigation, water supply and hydroenergy utilization, which are also reflected in sci-tech, education and management. In the second part, while affirming the achievements, the problems and shortcomings are analyzed. They mainly include: the flood-control standard is still at low level and reliable and complete water-control systems have not been established; water level of floods are increasingly raising causing the increase of flood prevention burden and risks; overexploiting of water resources and serious waste of water; water contamination and water environment deterioration ;the incompleteness, low quality, extensive management and low economic results of water conservancy projects, and so on. The paper holds that these problems should be attributed to the one-sided ideology and improper policies. Finally, in line with the requirement of the development and rejuvenation of China, the paper forecasts the tasks and goals of water conservancy construction in the days to come.

Innovation, practical benefits and prospects for the future development of automatic milking systems

Hongzhe JIANG,Wei WANG,Chunyang LI,Wei WANG

Frontiers of Agricultural Science and Engineering 2017, Volume 4, Issue 1,   Pages 37-47 doi: 10.15302/J-FASE-2016117

Abstract: Automatic milking systems (AMS) were designed to replace existing, labor-intensive machine milking and are an area of rapid development in modern dairy farming. The popularity of AMS lies in the convenience of management, decreasing workloads and the consistency of milking compared with non-automated machine milking. Nevertheless, this innovation has not been reviewed comprehensively and the practical benefits of AMS are still unclear. This review gives a brief overview of the historical development of milking machines and the workflow process of state-of-the-art AMS. In addition, a series of comparisons between AMS and current milking machines are made with respect to labor savings, quality parameters, udder health, herd behavior and mastitis detection and are summarized on the basis of relevant studies to show the benefits of the technological changes achieved by AMS. Finally, this review addresses several deficiencies in the technology and procedures of current AMS that need to be improved and also assesses recent advances in milking techniques with a particular focus on their potential for application in AMS.

Current status and prospects of reliability systems engineering in China

Frontiers of Engineering Management 2021, Volume 8, Issue 4,   Pages 492-502 doi: 10.1007/s42524-021-0172-2

Abstract: This study provides a systematic overview of the advent and evolution of reliability systems engineering (RSE) in China, and the latest RSE development, that is, model-based RSE (MBRSE), is emphatically introduced. The establishment of the system architecture and conceptual models of MBRSE is first described. The fundamental theory and methodology of MBRSE are then elaborated, with a V-model as the core of this approach. The development of various MBRSE platforms and the effectiveness of their implementation over the past 30 years are presented. The prospective trends in the development of RSE in China are outlined.

Development and prospects of municipal solid waste (MSW) incineration in China

NIE Yongfeng

Frontiers of Environmental Science & Engineering 2008, Volume 2, Issue 1,   Pages 1-7 doi: 10.1007/s11783-008-0028-6

Abstract: With the lack of space for new landfills, municipal solid waste (MSW) incineration is playing an increasingly important role in municipal solid waste management in China. The literatures on certain aspects of incineration plants in China are reviewed in this paper, including the development and status of the application of MSW incineration technologies, the treatment of leachate from stored MSW, air pollution control technologies, and the status of the fly-ash control method. Energy policy and its promotion of MSW-to-energy conversion are also elucidated.

Transient analysis of thermoelastic contact problem of disk brakes

Ali BELHOCINE, Mostefa BOUCHETARA

Frontiers of Mechanical Engineering 2013, Volume 8, Issue 2,   Pages 150-159 doi: 10.1007/s11465-013-0266-6

Abstract:

The main purpose of this study is to analyze the thermomechanical behavior of the dry contact between the brake disk and pads during the braking phase. The simulation strategy is based on computer code ANSYS11. The modeling of transient temperature in the disk is actually used to identify the factor of geometric design of the disk to install the ventilation system in vehicles. The thermal-structural analysis is then used with coupling to determine the deformation established and the Von Mises stresses in the disk, the contact pressure distribution in pads. The results are satisfactory compared to those found in the literature.

Hydrocele of the canal of Nuck — an old problem revisited

John Bunni, Mark Gillam, Ian Michael Pope

Frontiers of Medicine 2013, Volume 7, Issue 4,   Pages 517-519 doi: 10.1007/s11684-013-0300-4

Abstract:

Herein the authors describe the case of a young woman presenting with a tender lump in her groin. Clinically the differential was of either a reactive lymph node or a femoral hernia. Ultrasound scan was urgently arranged and showed a cystic lesion. Surgical exploration was carried out and revealed this to be a hydrocele of the canal of Nuck. This was excised and the patient’s symptoms resolved and she was discharged home the following day. We explore the embryology, pathophysiology and management of this rare entity.
